Rigid hierarchies can stifle creativity and waste potential. Especially in smaller organizations, a flatter, more collaborative structure can be a game-changer.
Traditional business wisdom often elevates strong top-down leadership as essential for success. While I’ve been part of such leadership and recognize its role in certain situations, I believe it’s often overemphasized. To me, leadership should be expressed by people across the team, not monopolized by those higher in the hierarchy.
Why? Rigid top-down systems tend to erode team vitality. They reduce people to order-takers, suppressing their creativity and ownership. Worse, they sometimes place undue confidence in the instincts of those in power—even when others on the team have greater context and skin in the game.
